Cat Vaccinations



Cats receive their immunity from mom with their first nursing of the antibody laden colostrum. Like dogs there is a narrow window where the antibodies can be absorbed into their system. The volume and quality of the colostrum will also depend on the litter size, and the duration of the labor. Cat are often rescued from shelters where the mom cat have no known vaccine status. This makes vaccinating a kitten very important. Kittens should receive a series of three vaccinations like dogs with 3 to 4 weeks between each vaccination. We will discuss the disease protection protocol and vaccines best suited to your cat be it an indoor, outdoor or anything in-between cat.



Flea and Parasite Control



Because we live in “lotus land” and until recently have gone many winters without a “freeze” we are blessed with more parasites that any of our eastern neighbors. We basically live in flea paradise! Other parasites we also encounter year round are ticks and worm parasites. Most of these parasites are considered to be zoonotic diseases. In other words we as the caretakers can get the parasites. Fortunately there are numerous flea/tick and deworming preparations available that you should discuss with the doctors. The Center for Disease Control has specific recommendations to protect you and your pets! You should also check in with us if you are traveling outside of Vancouver Island or the lower mainland because there are parasites unique and specific to those areas. The parasite problem we are seeing is only going to be getting worse with climate change and the northern migration of new disease carrying vectors that able to tolerate a more temperate climate.
